Panama email lists

The following set of email lists covers a wide range of topics and some different communities. Some are in English, some are in Spanish and some are bilingual. They all have a Panama connection in common.

Bajun Place

Subscribe by sending a blank email to BajunPlace- subscribe@yahoo.groups.com

Actually, this list does not come out of Panama's West Indian community, much of which has Bajan (Barbadian) ancestral roots. It was started by Zonians who were not satisfied with the bans on political arguments imposed and from time to time enforced by the Iguana and Zonelink lists (see below). There's not a lot of traffic on this list.

Balboa High School Alumni

Subscribe by sending a blank email to BalboaHighSchool- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

"On, Balboa! On, Balboa..." whether in its incarnation as a Panama Canal Company Schools Division operation, or in its post-treaty DODDS version, which ended in 1999.

Casco Viejo

Subscribe by sending a blank email to CascoViejo- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This English-language site is primarily about living in Panama City's colonial-era Casco Viejo neighborhood and the cultural scene that's growing and thriving there.

El Inversionista

Subscribe by sending a request to subscribe to inver12@hotmail.com

This is retired businessman Javier Romero's mostly-Spanish multilingual business-oriented discussion list, with some English articles and even the occasional piece in French or some other language. Romero is an anti-corruption crusader and this list adds a healthy dose of skepticism for anyone thinking about going into business here. Some of the criticism flies wide of the mark, and occasionally you will find some of Panama's notorious hustlers or their apologists using this forum to "clear their names." This site gets hacked from time to time, apparently by someone who doesn't agree with Romero's dim view of Panamanian banking practices.

Gay Panama

Subscribe by sending a blank email to gaypanama- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This Spanish-language site, which gets a modest amount of traffic, will introduce you to Panama's gay scene.

Iguana

Subscribe by sending an email with a blank subject line and the message "subscribe iguana [your email address]" in the text to Majordomo@mail.serve.com

This is one of the two main Zonian email discussion lists and an adjunct to the CZBrats website. Its original base was among Zonians who had been driven away from the Zonelink at about the time of the Clinton impeachment controversy, when those who did not accept the propositions that God is a far-right Republican and that beliefs to the left of that amount to treason sought a less raucous forum. Iguana is fairly strict about excluding politics from its discussions.

InfoArte

Subscribe by sending an email that says "subscribir" to lizirod@cableonda.net

This is journalist (and musician) Lizi Rodríguez's Spanish-language email information sheet about Panama's arts scene. If you subscribe you get updates every week or or about Sunday, and occasional special notices of particularly important upcoming events.

Panama Aggie Club

Subscribe by sending a blank email to Pma-aggies- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Texas A&M has educated a lot of Panamanians, and this site keeps the grads in touch between the annual Aggie Musters.

Panama Current Events & World

Subscribe by sending a blank email to Panama_c_e_w- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

A fairly raucous group that was founded, by and large, to get around some petty censorship on groups which have now been pushed to the margins by this one. You will find some good discussion here, and also cause to use your delete button.

Panama CyberNews

Subscribe by making an arrangement with Carmela Gobern at goberncl@sinfo.net

This is a bilingual list for which you must pay to subscribe, run by Carmela L. Gobern, a Panamanian of West Indian descent who used to write for the US Southern Command's newspaper, The Tropic Times. This service, which includes a lot of commercial announcements as well as news and discussion, is primarily oriented toward the West Indian community.

Panama Forum

Subscribe by sending a blank email to panamaforum- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This is a rather polite little general discussion group, for people who can't particularly relate to jackboot moderating, raving flames or vulgar abuse.

Panama Sport Fishing

Subscribe by sending a blank email to PanamaSportFishing- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

For anglers, whether of the fresh or salt water variety.

Panama Vets

Subscribe by sending a blank email to PanamaVets- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

US military vets are a large and growing part of Panama's American community, and a lot of people who were stationed in Panama and now live elsewhere maintain an interest in the isthmus. This email list is one of the ways that American military vets who were stationed in Panama, and Zonians and Panamanians who served in the US Armed Forces, keep in touch.

PanBocas

Subscribe by sending a blank email to PanamaVets- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This is a relatively small group mostly composed of Americans living in Panama's Bocas del Toro province.

Penonome Panama

Subscribe by sending a blank email to Penonome_Panama- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This little English-language group is for people who live, or are thinking of living, in or around the Interior town of Penonome .

RETIREnPANAMA

Subscribe by sending a blank email to RETIREnPANAMA- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This is an English-language site primarily oriented to the prospects and problems of foreigners coming to Panama to retire.

Retire in Chiriqui

Subscribe by sending a blank email to retireinchiriqui- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This English-language site is directed primarily at foreigners who have retired or are thinking about retiring in Panama's Chiriqui province.

Victoria's List

Subscribe by sending a request to subscribe to vfigge@cableonda.net

This is a mostly-English bilingual list run by Victoria Figge, an international financial consultant who at various points in her life has served as president of the Panamanian Business Executives Association (APEDE), the top administrator for the Colon Free Zone and the first director of the government's anti-money laundering Financial Analysis Unit. This list is mostly a daily review of international business news but also forwards some official documents and sophisticated unofficial analyses of interest to people in Panama's financial sector.

Zonelink

Subscribe by sending a blank email to Zonelink- subscribe@yahoogroups.com

This is the granddaddy of the Zonian email lists, principally dedicated to nostalgia about the former Canal Zone. There is also plenty of discussion about the Zonian diaspora and some about events in Panama. Despite the moderators officially frowning on and sometimes acting against such stuff, from time to time political and religious postings, generally of the far-right variety with the occasional responses that beg to differ (in that case usually followed by attacks on people's patriotism and/or piety) appear on the Zonelink.

(If you know of other Panama-related email lists, let us know and they will probably be included. We don't list groups that don't get much traffic, have an extremely narrow focus, are fronts for questionable businesses or are otherwise run by dishonest individuals.)
