Book signing party for 9°N
On February 8 at Allegro (on Calle 73 in San Francisco, not far
from Parque Omar), Panama's chapter of the National League of
American Pen Women held a book signing party featuring Eric Jackson's
collection of articles and graphics from Panama, "9°N." The coordinator
for the event was artist Janet Levi, the MC was Pat Alvarado (see
our
Fun page for Sparky the Wonder Dog's column, which she edits)
and Earl Patrick Watson helped in many ways. The event filled
Allegro's back room and generated sufficient book sales to allow
The Panama News to publish the print version of this issue of
the newspaper. The Pen Women were also happy with the turnout,
which included many of the folks responsible the Ancon Theatre
Guild's survival, University of Panama English department chairwoman
Melva Lowe de Gooden and a number of other prominent educators,
and even a reporter from The Washington Times.
The National League of American Pen Women is one of the key organizations
in Panama's English-speaking community, which brings together
women who are active in the arts and letters. Its membership overlaps
to include people who contribute to The Panama News, folks from
the Theatre Guild of Ancon, members of the Phi Delta Kappa educators'
organization and a who's who on the national art scene.
