For Earth Day, the Pan-American Roundtable of Colon held a student environmental essay contest, which drew more than 100 entrants. First place went to Katiuska Hernández, second to Elizabeth Blandon and third to Hikeru Gavalo, all students at Colegio Abel Bravo. Shown here, left to right, are the National Environmental Authority's Neyra Jiménez, the Roundtable's Elena Real (a retired educator), Hernández, Gavalo, Blandon and the Roundtable's Cheryl Klein. The competition was as successful as it was in large part due to the efforts of Abel Bravo teacher Zenaida Jaén, who served as a judge, and Abel Bravo assistant principal Oneida Avila, who encouraged students at her school to participate.
