Life has changed for many residents of the beach and mountain
communities of Panama Oeste, with the opening of an El Rey supermarket in Coronado.
Previously, the retail grocery shopping in the area was dominated by small establishments,
mostly owned by Chinese proprietors, which offer limited selections and somewhat
higher prices than those found at the large supermarket chains in Panama City.
Thus the many American retirees living in such communities as Cerro Campana,
Gorgona, Coronado, San Carlos and El Valle would usually drive into the capital
from time to time to buy most of their groceries. Now that's no longer necessary.
El Rey is not only going after this relatively wealthy sector of the local market,
but is also attracting customers of more modest means by offering free bus service
between the Coronado store and nearby communities.
