Work is progressing on the new Santo Tomas Hospital, which is being built next to the old hospital and behind the American Embassy. The entire public hospital complex is being gradually rebuilt --- before work began on the new Santo Tomas, a new Hospital del Niño was built on the other side of Santo Tomas from the embassy, and eventually new health care facilities will rise on the sites of those that have been or will be torn down. Santo Tomas, Panama City's public hospital for those who don't have Seguro Social or private health care plans, has seen budget cuts and increased demand for its services in the present economic slump.
