It's A Dog's Life

Lessons in Assertiveness

Lesson 31: The Call of the Wild

Dear Sparky,

I was born and raised on a farm as was my daddy and my granddaddy. However, the master sold the farm and moved to the city last summer. Now we live high above the ground, and I hate it. I have to sleep on a mat on the balcony, and we go for walks at night leashed together. I can't chase rabbits or flush birds from the bushes, and the horns are driving me crazy. Everybody blows signals that don't make any sense. They're weird. I'm so sad, Sparky. I miss the farm. I'm from a long line of hound dogs, and hunting is in my blood. What can I do?

Depressed in Dayton

Dear Depressed,

It has been said that the only thing constant in life is change, and life changes constantly. Focus positively on what's happening around you. Being leashed together can be fun. Work with your buddies, and make your walks a joint venture. Pick out a different scent each night to explore as a unit. City life, with all its drawbacks, can be as exciting as a hunt on the farm. There are only two rules for survival, however: stay alert and don't poop on the sidewalk.

Let me know how it goes.

Sparky
