Scenes from this season's first cayuco race

photos and captions by Eric Jackson

To start the morning's action, the boats were launched at Diablo and paddled under the Bridge of the Americas to the starting line at the Balboa Yacht Club.

These crews were doing a little bit of precision paddling, with the aim of getting into position under the Balboa Yacht Club dock without damaging their cayuco by crashing it into one of the posts.

This year, unlike last year's first cayuco race from the yacht club to the end of the Amador Causeway and back, the crowd was allowed to watch the start from the yacht club's dock

AND THEY'RE OFF! This year the boats started in two batches, which made chaos at the start less of a factor in the races' outcomes.

Winning in the girls' category was the Jungle Crew, who beat about half of the boys' boats.
