A recap of our first meeting --- May 9, 2002
The first meeting seemed to be a big success; a lot of enthusiasm. Four countries were represented: Australia, Russia, the USA and Panama. The name has remained, for the moment "The Artguilders." The majority decided they wanted to keep having the meetings at my house and everyone agreed to bring a small snack but this is not obligatory. In future the meetings will be held the second Tuesday of every month, at 7:00 pm. Our first project as a group will be an Arts and Crafts Festival to be held in November.
Present at the meeting were:
YTSEL SCHROEDER a fine artist who actually worked on the restoration of the ceiling of the Teatro Nacional and currently has a showing of her work which will be on until May 15, at the Bovedas Art Gallery. Myron, Ytsel1s husband accompanied her as her "appreciator." He also takes pictures of her work, which are quite good.
GAE SPEED does stained glass, quilting, painting and writes poetry. She1s a black belt in Karate, a dive-master and is "going to swim the English Channel."
LESLEY TASSELL, a former nurse at Gorgas Hospital does marvelous things with the quilting technique, using local fabrics. She brought a stupendous pillow backed in red silk for show and tell.
CAROL SKINNER is currently working on a quilt and looks forward to dyeing her own fabrics in the future.
NORMA DIAZ is known for her stained glass work and now is very excited about starting beading. She passed around a photo album of the first exhibition of her work. Her dream is to set up a mini-gallery in her home and offer classes, not only in her fields of expertise, but tapping the skills of others among our group. Her main interest is in "helping others."
MARSHA KAT is a fine artist in all the media and also a splendid singer. Her main contribution to our group was to offer to head up any arts festivals or gallery shows we may want to present. She is very experienced in setting up shows, having been doing just that for many years.
LANDIS MAJOR brought some photographs for show and tell that were taken with a digital camera and were in color! We are all familiar with Landis's marvelous black and white images. He told us about his commission for a coffee-table book which was completed a few months ago.
AURA MARCH is a CPA and makes dolls, which she sells, all over the world.
LUDMILA ISAKOVA "doesn't do anything but appreciate art very much."
KRISTINA GARRIDO SHENTSOVA does restoration of furniture, ceramics, paintings, etc. Certainly a very valuable element to have in our group.
MARTHA MADURO'S semi precious stone beadwork necklaces she brought for show and tell are so magnificent she sold one on the spot!
DAVID LEVI showed off his wonderful sculpted chair and was persuaded to bring out his ceramic masks. After the reaction of the other artists present he1ll probably start to do more ceramic work again in the future.
ADAN RESTREPO and NADIA GOURBO are a husband and wife team of architects who specialize in Interior Design, but deliver the whole package to the client, however are always looking for other artists' work to use in their designs. Nadia is very interested to doing murals for the homes she designs. Ludmila brought this interesting couple, for which we thank her.
I got to show off my 30 x 302 batea depicting the cycle of life, which I just completed and have been working on for over a year
