Different views from on high

Human eyes perceive certain parts of the spectrum of light and radiation, but there are a lot of other ways to see the world. Above we have a black and white view of Panama and Costa Rica on one recent day, taken by the Landsat. Below, we have the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) view of the Meso-American Isthmus taken from the Terra satellite. The different ways of looking at the earth from above are useful for different purposes. Though originally developed for military use, meteorolgists, environmentalists, mineral prospectors, agronomists, law enforcement agencies and many other professionals have a wide variety of tools available for their specialized purposes.
