Road work in the high areas

President Mireya Moscoso recently paid a visit to Volcan, for ceremonies to mark the completion of improvements to the roads around Volcan, Cerro Punta and Rio Sereno.
The president used the occasion to say that she wants to build a road from Volcan to Boquete. There would be opposition from environmentalists and many area residents if the proposed road went through or too close to the ecologically sensitive Volcan Baru National Park. A road a few miles to the south, passing mostly through deforested cow pastures, would enjoy substantially more public support. Photo by Dino Barkema
