Donation helps Biblioteca Nacional serve the blind

Retired businessman Juan Manuel Handal, right, recently donated his "talking book" tape collection to Panama's principal public library, the Biblioteca Nacional. The donation included 330 English-language books, 93 Spanish-language books, a special tape recorder that allows recorded books that use the system employed by Spain's Asociacion de Ciegos de España to be transferred onto formats that are used in Panama, and a supply of blank tapes. Shown with Handal are Leonor de Motta (left) and Nitzia Barrantes (center). In the foreground are some samples of Handal's etched crystal calligraphy, which can be bought by clicking on the ad on the front page of The Panama News.
