X National Games (Special Olympics - Panama)

Panama inaugurated its 10th National Games (Special Olympics for the handicapped) on September 5th in the Catholic University Gymnasium. The Special Olympics began under the auspices of the Kiwanis Club in 1983 and has grown to date to include most of Panama’s provinces. It consists of training all handicapped, eight years and older, for competition in a variety of sports. Their aim is not only to provide athletic training but also to develop their aptitude, skills and courage to be able to participate and experience happiness with their family members as well as with their community, despite their shortcomings. The program includes basketball, tennis, table tennis, swimming, bowling, athletics and some cultural activities, all to be directed by Special Olympics trainers and judges.

The ceremony opened with the entrance of the delegations of athletes, trainers, judges and volunteers into the gymnasium. Athletes, representatives of each delegation making a round within the gymnasium carried the Special Olympic torch. José Jaén Jr., National Executive Director of the games gave the opening remarks, followed by Dennis Bruegemann, Regional Director for Special Olympics in Latin America, who explained of the values of the Special Olympics. Yolanda Eleta de Varela, president of the Special Olympics Games, gave the welcome message. The games’ activities lasted four days, Thursday through Sunday.
