Although the US military's SCN television network departed with the troops at the end of 1999, there is more English-language TV programming available in Panama than there ever was before. Formerly, one had to be within range of the SCN signal, living in the metro area where the cable system could bring you some English programs, or equipped with an expensive satellite dish to enjoy television in English. Now, however, the Panamanian commercial networks feature some of their programs with a secondary audio program (SAP) in English, so with a properly equipped set you can watch local broadcasts of the World Series or The Sopranos in either English or Spanish. Moreover, DirecTV is available throughout the republic --- even in areas where the Panamanian networks's signal is poor --- and that service carries channels in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. The ready availability of English-language television programming in the Interior is one of the factors behind the westward shift of the English-speaking community's demographic center from the canal area towards the beaches and mountains of the Interior.
