Where the Transistmica begins and ends

Here we have a scene from a rainy season evening, with the white streaks representing the headlights of oncoming traffic from where Avenida Nacional turns into the Transistmica, and the red streaks made by the taillights of cars veering right in front of the Hospital Santa Fe, making the transition from the Trans-Isthmian Highway to Avenida Frangipani.

But of course, to honor the Great Liberator and confuse the tourists, on many Panama City maps the Transistmica (Trans-Isthmian Highway) is marked as Via Simon Bolivar. It seems that every other street in Panama has two numbers and three names, and most buildings have names but not numbers. Thus urban navigation is according to proximity to landmarks, rather than by street names and address numbers that correspond to a North American-style grid. Photo by Eric Jackson.
