Artguilders' November meeting

by Janet Levi

On November 12 we had a wonderful meeting: everybody shouting at the same time and anxious to show off what they’d been up to, artistically speaking. It was a special treat to finally get to meet in Norma’s studio. It’s an example of the perfect setup for office/workshop/showroom that I think we could all learn from.

First of all, we stood in a circle and each of us patted the back of the person in front of us, congratulating ourselves for a job well done.

During the business part of the meeting we discussed letting people who "didn’t do anything" join and decided we wanted to keep it status quo (only producing artists). However we can invite guests and we need people to help with bazaars, etc. who aren’t crazy doing their own thing.

We also discussed what to do with our huge fund ($129 and some change); Aura and Gae are going to be our co-treasurers. The conclusion was to let it just sit there for now and perhaps hold events to add to it in the future. We talked about having mini-shows, as in Norma’s studio or elsewhere.

The subject of how long to keep a person on our mailing list was brought up and the consensus of opinion was to simply put in an "unsubscribe" clause in every newsletter so that people can decide for themselves if they want to be included or not.

We decided that the meetings should be bi-lingual if necessary.

I brought up the subject of Charlene Martin, former teacher here in Panama, now in Korea and member of a quilting group. She shared pictures of their joint project and it would be nice to share what we’re doing with her. I’ve included her in my mailing list and I encourage you to correspond with her.

We had a new member join us: Sharon Cook. Sharon paints on gourds and she brought an example of her work, a really cute Santa Claus.

Martha Maduro showed us a really splendid necklace of lapis lazuli and some other wonderful stones.

Gracie Spencer opened up her finished quilt (the same one she showed us at the last meeting, unfinished). As usual her quilt took our breath away. What can I say, except, to quote a famous quilter, "We were WOWED."

Carol Skinner took two small quilts out of her bag and they were wonderful, of course. Everybody just had to hold the quilts and cuddle with them; they are soooo delicious and beautiful.

Lesley Tassell shook out of few frogs from HER bag and we immediately got into a frog fight. They’re so CUTE I want to start a collection.

Aura March didn’t bring anything for Show and Tell. Naughty, Aura.

Norma Diaz didn’t need to pull anything out of her purse because her whole studio speaks for her. We were staring all around like bumpkins come to the city for the first time.

Yours truly offered an Angelic Cat batea, done with metallic paints, for inspection.
