It's A Dog's Life

So you might as well enjoy it
Lessons in Assertiveness

Who Is That Doggie in the Window?

Dear Sparky,

Jack, my master and I sit in the den every evening after dinner to watch TV. It's our quiet time. No one bothers us. Well, last night during a commercial, I noticed a shadow cross the window. Of course, I immediately went to investigate. To my surprise, it wasn't one of Jack's friends. It was a strange dog. He was tall, dark, and rather rakish. His big pointed ears and long snout reminded me a bit of Clark Gable and Mr. Spock. Our eyes met only for a moment before Jack came to the window, and the stranger ran away. I couldn't sleep all night thinking of him - who he was, what he was doing by my window. Well, this morning after Jack left for work, the stranger returned. He smiled at me through the window. I tried to open the door, but Jack had locked it. The stranger stayed by the window all day until Jack came home and shooed him away. Jack was so jealous. He even called me the "B" word!

I'm distraught, Sparky. I've never felt this way before about another dog. What's happening to me? Am I being disloyal to Jack to want to run off with a total stranger?

Dazed in Daytona

Dear Dazed,

Certainly not! It's perfectly natural and normal to be attracted to our own kind. The canine-human relationship has a long and rocky history, which dates back to the days of cave dogs. We've guarded humans from themselves for ages. Jack is not really jealous, he's just afraid to watch TV alone, and perhaps he's also concerned about your well-being. What do you know about this stranger other than the fact that he's good-looking and persistent? If you run off with him, what guarantees do you have that he will be there in the morning? If you get "in the family way", will he be there when you need him? If not, will Jack take you back? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself before you run off and leave the comforts of Jack's living room.

I'm not saying don't go; I'm saying think twice and be careful.

Sparky
