Colon and Cuba pay tribute to Martí
One of the newer and better works of public art in Colon is this monument to the Cuban writer and revolutionary José Martí. Martí, one of Latin America's most renowned poets and also a journalist, essayist, political prisoner, diplomat and teacher, died in battle in 1895 during a revolution against Spanish colonial rule. The Martí legacy is embraced both by Fidel Castro's government in Havana and by exile groups and internal dissidents that seek to overthrow Cuban communism. Photo by Eric Jackson
