Canal Zone legacy a powerful tourist attraction

The Panamanian government's IPAT tourism bureau may be loathe to admit it, but an important part of the national tourism scene is Americans with historic ties to Panama returning to see how things have changed, and sometimes to find a place to retire. These visitors come in several varieties. There are people who came here with the US military, with those who married Panamanians often coming back to the isthmus to live. We get lots of tourists from the Antillean community, especially New York City residents who trace ancestry through Panama. Here we have some former Canal Zone residents, taking pictures and checking out the changes in the old neighborhood of Colon. These kinds of visitors usually stay in the country longer, visit more places and spend more money here than other sorts of tourists. Photo by Eric Jackson
