Part of Panama's economic crisis is an inability to properly maintain urban infrastructures. Here we had a broken sewer main that bubbled up through Via España, crumbling the road surface and obliging pedestrians to walk through raw sewage.
It took crews from the IDAAN water and sewer utility and the Ministry of Public Works a couple of weeks to make more substantial repairs, but as a temporary measure they used asphalt to build a "canal' that routed the sewage into the gutter, so that people could step over rather than walk through the foul liquid.
