After Henry Morgan's devastating 17th century raid, Panama City moved west from Panama Viejo to a more easily defended peninsula several miles to the west. The colonial-era Casco Viejo is home of the presidential palace and was the scene of a lot of Panama's most noteworthy historical events, but over the years much of the neighborhood fell into decline. These days the area is attracting many new residents who are investing in the restoration of old buildings. The area is also the locus for a cultural revival that's getting a boost because of Panama's centennial as an independent republic.
