Congos and diablos in Portobelo

photos by Landis Major

Celebrating the syncretism of many cultures that's the Panamanian tradition, Portobelo celebrated the Third Congos and Diablos Festival on March 8. The diablo masks and costumes derive from West African culture, but the devil connotation and the eventual victory of the angelitos over the diablitos --- for this year --- come from Catholicism. Congo dancing is a cultural legacy from the Cimarrones --- African slaves who fled from their Spanish masters and set up their own communities in the jungle.
