Every Panamanian schoolkid knows that Simón Bolívar was Latin America's "Great Liberator," whose military campaigns severed Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia from Spanish domination.

However, the Argentine José de San Martín played prominent roles in the liberation of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Peru. After San Martín led an assault that took Lima by sea and Bolívar's armies were prepared to sweep across the rest of Peru by land, the two men met at Guayaquil. The two men disagreed about Latin America's political future, so San Martín stepped aside in favor of Bolívar and went into exile in Europe.
