Lessons in Assertiveness

Identity crisis

Dear Dr. Mutt,

I have six brothers and two sisters, and I don't like any of them. I never worried about it until the other day when someone came to visit the master. My siblings commenced their hare-brained racket, and I kept myself aloof as usual. I've gotten used to the ooh's and ah's; but when I heard the words WHAT A CUTE LITTLE KITTY, it was like a dagger in my heart. My hair stood on end and my spine curled automatically. Imagine, Sparky, to be called a feline by a total stranger! I was devastated! But that's not the end of the story! Now my mom tells me I'm adopted! She says the master found me in a dumpster and brought me home, and it doesn't matter to her that I'm not a canine because she loves me anyway.

Oh Dr. Mutt, I want to be a dog, but they tell me I'm a cat! What can I do?

Belittled in Baton Rouge

Dear Belittled,

Not to worry whether you are canine or feline. There is room in the world for all of us, and if WE can live together in relative peace and harmony, let the world take note!

The relationship between canines and felines is much maligned, and we do get along with each other much more than advertised. You are a fortunate little feline! You are loved, and that is the sum total of it all. Dare to be different!

Sparky
