Journalist, US Embassy, foundations get wheelchairs for Darien residents
Briton tells of jungle adventures past and future

Panama can be a terrible place for anybody with a disability, but there are many people who understand that the inability to walk or see or hear doesn't make a person worthless, and willing to lend a hand to help such individuals and society as a whole by securing the tools needed to overcome obstacles. Lucas Batista, a journalist with Radio Voz sin Fronteras in Meteti, Darien, ought to know, as he hasn't allowed his disability to stop him from leading a productive life. With assistance from the American Embassy, the Fundacion Pro-Impedidos de Panama and the US-based Wheelchair Foundation, he's now a bit more productive. A request and a collective effort secured wheelchairs for Batista and two other needy Darien residents. Seated in the photo above is Lucas Batista, and standing, left to right, are Luis Batista, Darcy Compton (special projects coordinator at the embassy), Thomas Ford (president of the Asociacion Pro-Impedidos), Elio Batista and Virginia de Alvarado (executive director of the Fundación Pro-Impedidos). Also receiving new wheelchairs were Teresa Samudio and Justo Jaramillo. Photo courtesy of the American Embassy
