Hay fever season's coming
Many hay fever sufferers from North America will find Panama a tropical paradise without goldenrod or ragweed. No, we have other irritating pollens in our air. The elephant grass is beginning to bloom, and when these white flowers release their pollen many people with allergies will get runny noses and stuffy heads. This species, which Panamanians call "paja canalera," was deliberately imported from Vietnam by the United States in the hope that it would control erosion along the banks of the Panama Canal. It has become a highly invasive weed and major agricultural pest as well as an annoyance to people with hay fever. Also nearly upon us are the height of rainy season, when the mold spore count goes way up. Photo by Eric Jackson
