The Panamanian Centennial as an
important national business event
According to
most of the street vendors whose opinions we sampled, sales
were just a little slower than expected at the Independence Day
and Flag Day parades. Several Panama City taxi drivers told The
Panama News that, as most of the tourists at the hotels used
transportation arranged by the hotels or by tour groups, they
only saw a little increase in business over the holidays.
However, the hotels and many of the restaurants did a very
brisk business catering to the tens of thousands of visitors
who came here to participate in our centennial festivities.
During the celebrations President Moscoso used the occasion to
shanghai her guest Sean Connery into cutting the ribbon at the
unfinished Colombian-owned Multicentro shopping mall, a number
of international and Panamanian musicians got paying gigs and
Rubén Blades played for free. Photo by Eric
