In October we broke our readership record --- set the previous month --- by nearly 10 percent. So far our daily download logs suggest that the record will be shattered again this month. If you want to look at it in terms of hits, we are on a pace toward a million-hit last quarter of 2003. Viewed in terms of visits, we are averaging more than 1000 per day. Taking those figures and other things we know together, we can conservatively estimate that there are more that 10,000 people who regularly read most or all of every issue of The Panama News.

We publish this download data because we believe that transparency is good business, and we are willing to share our complete download data with our advertising clients, our potential clients and even our competitors. (C'mon, you folks at EPASA, you don't need to make any pretenses to get us to reveal all!)

But meanwhile we are still a precarious business, mainly because all the hype by yesteryear's dot-com hustlers keeps a lot of people from believing in the Internet as an advertising medium but also because we are not connected with Panama's advertising cartel or aristocratic families. This website is a micro-enterprise owned by Eric Jackson, but also an unprofitable service run for the benefit of Panama's English-speaking community, both on the isthmus and abroad.

We have received a number of reader contributions over the past few weeks, and those will help us survive but were not enough to get us out of our deep financial hole.
