US Secretary
of State Colin L. Powell was in Panama over the holidays to get
a glimpse of our centennial celebrations and for brief meetings
with President Moscoso and members of her administration to
discuss corruption and other issues. Here he is shown with
Panamanian Foreign Minister Harmodio Arias. The secretary's
visit was part of a swing through the region with quick stops
in Honduras and Nicaragua, where Powell spoke to the leaders of
those countries about corruption as well. On the way back to
the States told reporters that the region has a lot of poverty
"and not coincidentally" a lot of corruption. But
Arias blew off any suggestion of corruption in the Panamanian
government and complained that Powell had not pointed out any
specific act of corruption on the Mireyistas' part. Photo by
