Something about December...
Down here, this is the month when the rains let up, the wind starts blowing steady out of the north and dry season begins. We also celebrate Mothers' Day in December in Panama, on December 8, the Catholic Day of the Immaculate Conception.
For the Christians, this is the Christmas season, when they celebrate the birth of the one they called The Prince of Peace, a remarkable individual who preached love and forgiveness way back when you could get crucified for saying things like that. For the Jews it's Hanukkah (December 20-27 this year), when the faithful celebrate the rededication of the temple in Jerusalem in 164 BCE, after centuries of defeat, captivity and exile.
Among the important charitable and community events that are coming up, the 20/30 Club's December 12-13 telethon for kids and the December 14 Mayor's Christmas Parade in Panama City stand out.
The sculpture shown above, which is located in Panama City's Parque Omar, uses Japanese symbolism --- the crane --- to deliver a similar message all year long.
