'Twixt the Rockies and the Andes
A central ridge along the spine of Panama, which is our section of the Continental Divide that runs all the way through the Americas, sends water either toward the Pacific Ocean or the Caribbean Sea. So where do the Rocky Mountains end and the Andes begin? There are various theories about this. Some would place the divide somewhere around the low point of the Continental Divide, through which the Panama Canal was built. However, if you want to look at the geological history, most of Panama was a volcanic archipelago that rose from the Caribbean Sea and then drifted into place to plug the gap between North and South America. So in geography, too, Panama doesn't tend to fit neatly into someone else's continuum. Graphic courtesy of NASA
