How DID he do that?
by Eric Jackson
The last time I went to a magic show in this country, I was 40 or so years younger than I am now and a tough audience of Zonian boys about my age were regaling the performer with cries of FAKE, FAKE!
For the December 13 Magic of Christmas show at the Theatre Guild of Ancon I promised I wouldnt do that, and I kept my word. For one thing, the demographics werent right. Sure, there were plenty of adults in the crowd, but mostly with kids who were a few years younger than the gang of little maleantes who gave that poor magician such a hard time way back when.
Eric Vernons show was basic, but pretty good --- card and rope tricks, handkerchiefs coming from impossible places, paper strips that did weird things when cut, mind reading exercises and that sort of thing --- but he didnt saw his assistant in two and put her bloodlessly back together again, nor did he say the right magic words to make the cabinet disappear, nor turn the president of the republic into a short-tailed shrew. Nothing like that.
But it was a good time for all, a show directed to kids after an adult-oriented play, and a success for Panamas English-language theater group.
And though I intellectually know that he must have been palming things, I still dont see how he did it. So maybe he CAN turn me into a newt if he doesnt like this review.
