Esther Ruth Maduro Del Valle has succumbed to her last illness. She was 89 years old.
Esther Maduro, born in 1914, was the last surviving sibling of her brothers Monty, Emily, and Eddie Maduro. Graduated as a nurse and midwife in 1938, she went on to be the first nurse in Panama to apprentice and practice as a nurse-anesthesiologist. Miss Maduro then worked for many years as a neonatal nurse, and as such, cared for hundreds of babies, many of whom are prominent citizens in the republic today. Many Panamanian families remember her fondly from the days that she cared for their children.
Known as a tireless worker, collecting and distributing goods for poor and needy children, "La Niña Estér" provided help for many humble families. She will be remembered by friends and family in Panama, The United States, Aruba and Holland.
In Aruba and Holland, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Lillah de Maduro, nieces and nephews Raymond and Isabel, Ruth, Roy and Grace, Sandra and Salah, Eddie and Claudia; great nieces and nephews Kaye, Lynn, Roger, Raymond Henry, Rachel, Lisa, Noah, Amalia, Monty, Robert, Ricky and Rebecca; and great-great nieces and nephews Lauren Iris, Benjamin, Omar, Nora, Kenza, and Luis Carlos. In the United States and Panama she is survived by her nieces and nephews Patricia, Marlena and Donald, Carlos and Martha, and by her great nieces and nephews Arthur, Eddie, Emily and Essie.
Services were held on January 16 at the Kol Shearith Israel Synagogue.
