Playa Grande on a holiday weekend
These photos of Playa Grande in Panama Oeste's San Carlos district should tell you a few things. The black sand? It's a fine-grained naturally occurring ferrous mineral that you can pick up with a magnet, and because it's black it absorbs the sun's heat more than white sand does, so you don't want to walk barefoot on it in the middle of a sunny day. The lack of huge crowds at about four o'clock on the Saturday afternoon of a long holiday weekend during the peak of tourist season? The buses full of day trippers from the capital, some 100 kilometers to the east, have headed back. Still, this beach wasn't very crowded a few hours earlier when they were here. The moral of the story is that Panama has some fine beaches that are almost never crowded. We have plenty of room for a few new visitors --- but let's not let too many ruin a good thing.
