Torrijos fires up the faithful
by Eric Jackson
Taking place at mid-day on the Monday after Alemán's huge Sunday rally, about a half a block away, the Torrijos campaign mobilized a much smaller crowd for a different purpose. As the Torrijos - Lewis Navarro - Arosemena slate presented its credentials to the Tribunal Electoral, a crowd by and large composed of metro area politicians and campaign workers, both from the PRD and their Partido Popular junior partners, hobnobbed and heard rousing "let's go turn out the vote" appeals from the candidates.
If one tries to judge this rally by its size, the novelty of the candidates' presentations or body languages of the various PRD factions --- interesting as those matters may be --- the point is missed. There were the usual suspects here, of course. But by and large these were not the men in suits who dominated many a previous Torrijos gathering. These were the housewives, university and high school students and retirees who, along with a regular network of committed party activists, are the core of a grass-roots campaign. After this and similar gatherings in orther parts of the country, teams of canvassers set out on the door-to-door adventures upon which close elections usually turn.
