This was the scene four days after a fire that began in the Almacen Lambada on Colon's Avenida Bolivar on the afternoon of February 9. It took firefighters nearly five hours to control the flames, which spread to nearby businesses, and while the bomberos were battling the blaze police fought off a crowd of some 150 looters with clubs and tear gas, arresting 11. One firefighter went to the emergency room with smoke inhalation injuries and several cops were hurt by rocks or bottles thrown at them but worst of all, two days later members of the SINAPROC disaster relief agency found the charred remains of a 25-year-old father of two little girls who worked at the Almacen Gran Maestro inside that burned-out store. The fire, which took place on the edges of Colon's red light district, smoldered for several days, closing one of the city's main streets to traffic and disrupting business at many nearby establishments that were not directly affected by the flames.
