Panamanian dancer and choreographer does well abroad, comes home to play
photos by ALTERARTE
Milvia Martínez comes to the Panamanian cultural scene with a notable pedigree --- she's the daughter of Chuchú Martínez, the late Nicaraguan-born Panamanian poet, playwright and philosophy professor who left academia for a career as an army sergeant. (Not just any army sergeant, but the closest aide and advisor to the late General Omar Torrijos.) But Milvia studied in Chile and then went to New York --- where her ancestry means nothing --- and distinguished herself with the Tucason Dance Company. Witha that traveling show she learned dance and choreography under the Japanese master Min Tanaka. Last year she returned to Panama and has quickly become one of the stars of our national dance scene.
The Asociacion Cultural AlterArte will be presenting "Cabanga," an original creation by Milvia Martínez, starring Milvia Martínez, at INAC's Teatro Anita Villalaz on April 1, 2 and 3.
