"Boeing, Boeing" at the Ancon Theatre
Campy adult humor at the Theatre Guild
by Eric Jackson
Its not pornography. By its Greek roots, that word means writing about prostitutes and in its modern sense prominent American jurists cant define it but know it when they see it, but either way, its none of that. No, Boeing, Boeing is an English-language adaptation of a French play about Bernard (Vernon Skitt), a lecherous man who tries to juggle affairs with three flight attendants, Janet (Hillary Hughes), Jacqueline (Joanna De Ycaza) and Judith (Betsy Ward) around their airline schedules. His friend Robert (Cris Garza) is first intrigued, then impressed, and then an accomplice. His housekeeper Bertha (Edda Garza) plays along in the Sancho Panza tradition.
This play --- the annual Carlos Williams spring production --- is a campy comedy about about infidelity and its pitfalls. Is it over-acted? Of course it is. This is French camp, not Hollywood subtlety. The characters are caught in an increasingly ridiculous situation and theyre not supposed to be subtle about it.
Its a comedy not only about an impossible string of affairs, but also about the supposed national characteristics of French, German and American women --- in its original creation from a Frenchmans point of view.
From this reviewers perspective of the opening night show, all of the actors and actresses performed well but the superlatives should go to Joanna De Ycaza, who maybe not coincidentally played the same role in Spanish at the Teatro ABA.
The Theatre Guilds production of Boeing, Boeing is a lot of fun, and if you havent seen it you will have three more chances, on March 11, 12 and 13.
