Bernal picks up rector's gauntlet
photos by Eric Jackson
On April 28 law professor Miguel Antonio Bernal went with about 150 supporters, most of them law students, to a meeting of the University of Panama Academic Council where a proposal to fire him for disrespecting Rector Gustavo García de Paredes was on the agenda. However, the move to oust the 30-year veteran professor for his criticisms of the administration's budget decisions appears to violate several laws and university statutes and Bernal went to court to challenge the process. Thus the administration put off this proposal while the courts ponder the situation.
