Tom Bleming, the man standing next to Martín Torrijos in the picture above, once tried to overthrow the president-elect's dad. A Vietnam vet, Bleming volunteered for an ill-fated late-70s guerrilla movement aimed at overthrowing the military government that then ruled Panama. He was betrayed and arrested and did a couple of very hard years in Panamanian prisons before his release shortly before General Omar Torrijos Herrera's death. Since then Bleming has married one of the late general's Herrera neices and, although he's a US citizen who can't vote here, he shared his wife's enthusiasm for the younger Torrijos's presidential campaign. The candidate and the former guerrilla are shown here in Santiago, where the Blemings were celebrating their wedding anniversary and Torrijos was on the campaign trail.
