United States congratulates
Panama on its elections
by the US Embassy in Panama
The Embassy of the United States of America in Panama congratulates the victorious candidates in Sundayís national election, especially President-elect Martin Torrijos, for winning a long, hard-fought, but clean campaign against three very able opponents. The United States Government looks forward to working closely with the incoming government as we continue our excellent bilateral relationship, based on our long friendship and shared values with the Panamanian people.
We also congratulate the Electoral Tribunal and the government of Panama on the exemplary conduct of the May 2, 2004 elections. The efficiency, transparency and fairness of the elections provide an admirable example and model for the region and the world. Finally, we congratulate the people of Panama on their commitment to democratic principles, as proved by their high turnout and peaceful actions during these elections.
