Proyecto Bolivar's new season
The Casco Viejo --- where, predictably and erroneously, some of the self-style security savants in the gringo community warn you not to venture at night --- is home to an impressive cultural revival these last few years, and one of the scene's emerging centerpieces is the Proyecto Bolivar arts season. Mostly this corporate-sponsored highbrow cultural series takes place in the Teatro Nacional. As the project is registered as a charitable organization, tickets to its events are tax-deductible.
But of course, the tax deduction probably won't mean much to you. If you're living off a retirement pension or earning less than 800 bucks a month on the local economy, it becomes totally irrelevant. If you are bringing home an impressive income, it's a pittance. The tax factor mostly comes into play if your company intends to buy a block of season tickets for its corporate entertainment purposes, whether those might be schmoozing sophisticated clients, raising the company flag in artsy circles or keeping key employees --- like maybe yourself --- happy.
In any case, season tickets are $100 if you buy them before July 2, and $180 thereafter. And yes, you can buy tickets to the individual events if that's your pleasure. If you buy a season ticket, these are the events to which you get admission:
JULY 27: "La Magia del Ballet," with the Ballet Nacional de Panamá and special invited dancers from the Illinois Ballet
AUGUST 22: Big band jazz, with trumpeter Vitín Paz and his band
SEPTEMBER 21: Opera night, "La Finta Giardinera," with tenor Ian Honeyman and a number of British and Panamanian musicians
OCTOBER 12: "Momentum," a Panamanian contemporary dance troupe
NOVEMBER 28: "Darien, Raices de Agua y Fuego," a play about the history of the Darien
DECEMBER 14: End of the year concert, with international and Panamanian musicians to be announced
