Canada doesn't have an independence day as such. They have been running their own affairs since 1868, but Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is still their ceremonial head of state. But on the First of July 136 years ago Canada got self-governing dominion status, and began to celebrate that date as Dominion Day.

A few years back, as part of an historical process that included the adoption of a new flag, the recognition of bilingual and multicultural national realities and an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to adopt a national constitution that would have eliminated the queen's role, the holiday's name was changed to Canada Day.

But Canadians celebrate it just the same, and on this year's occasion members of Panama's Canadian community gathered at Bennigans to renew their ties, welcome new members and toast their nation.
