Now do the politicians REALLY expect us to call it that?
The Cafe de Asis scene

Well, yes. The events of January 9, 1964 and the following days were the beginning of the end of the old Canal Zone and a crucial turning point in Panamanian history. The flag protest that turned into a bloodbath has been celebrated and recognized in many ways by the Panamanian people, and will continue to be. But is anyone REALLY going to start calling Avenida Central "Calle 9 de Enero"? It will be just one more Panama City street with multiple names to confuse newcomers. Meanwhile, nobody who knows anything will confuse the politicians who made this name change with the Martyrs of 1964. Nor will many people confuse this empty demagogic gesture with a worthwhile service to the Panamanian people. Photo by Eric Jackson
