Polka Spots or Polka Dots?
Dear Dr. Mutt,
Could you please settle a dispute? I'm a Dalmatian, and I share the patio with a Beagle and a Basset Hound. Yesterday we were having a friendly conversation about our fur when I mentioned my spots. Well, both the Beagle and the Basset claim that they have spots, but I have dots. I say I have spots, only smaller and more numerous. Who's right?
Dear Freckled,
According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, a dot is "a tiny round mark made by or as if by a pointed instrument; a spot, a point." And a spot is "a mark on a surface differing sharply in color from the surroundings; especially, a stain or blot." So I would have to say that you have spots and not dots. Hope this settles things.
Regards,
