NLAPW Anona Kirkland Writing Contest

On August 10 at Excedra Books the Panama Canal branch of the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) held its last formal event, the awards ceremony for the Anona Kirkland Writing Contest.
The chapter is closing down because the national organization has strict membership requirements that the local branch now finds difficult to meet. The remainder of the groups scholarship fund has been given to the Summer Institute of Linguistics, a Christian missionary group that studies indigenous languages.
The chapters demise does not mean that the writers and artists who made up the chapter are going away or ceasing their activities, however. Its the end of an era, the chapters treasurer Joan Manfredo remarked, adding that the NLAPW members will continue their work in the arts and letters into the new era.
This years winners were Robert D. Arlett in the poetry competition for Love, Your Son and Sydney Weinberg in the short story category for her Walking Home in Dry Season, with a special award for Mary Websters Caribbean-voice tale Colon Woman.
Anona Kirkland, the former social page editor for the old Star & Herald who was educated at Brown, Harvard and the University of Panama and who was on that evening three days short of her 100th birthday, attended the event and was given a special lifetime achievement award.
