The conventional wisdom is that in order to live the good life you should take time to stop and smell the flowers. But maybe not these ones. These succulents of the Stapelia genus, known as carrion flowers and by other names, are of southern African origin but grow quite well in Panama. They give off a stench remarkably like rotten meat, a mimicking odor that smells authentic enough to attract flies in search of something gross to eat. That's how the plants are able to pollinate and reproduce. Photos by Eric Jackson
