Not her painted bateas
The artworks for which Janet Levi is best known, and from which she derives the most income, are her non-traditionally painted bateas, with her three main genres in recent years being Panamanian folk scenes, cats and Judaica. Bateas, of course, are the wooden trays that Panamanians have been using for many everyday purposes since well before the Europeans, Africans and Asians arrived on the isthmus. Levi also paints bright decorations on wooden furniture. Very utilitarian.
But she also does coloring books, one of which The Panama News is beginning to serialize in this issue. This feature, which appears in our fun section, also turns The Panama News into a trilingual publication of sorts. To our mainly English website with a small Spanish section we now add "Imar durgan kaya burba sobaled," which is Kuna for "Kuna animal words to color" (or "Palabras kunas de animales para colorear" in Spanish).
