On September 17, heavy rains swept across the Panama City - San Miguelito metro area, flooding several local rivers and causing landslides in San Miguelito. Some 10,000 people were forced by the rising waters to flee their homes, and about 700 people saw their homes in San Miguelito, Juan Diaz or Pacora totally destroyed.

As this issue of The Panama News was uploaded, there had been 13 confirmed deaths and nine people were still missing. A state of emergency had been declared in the affected areas.

Those who were routed from their homes by the floods came back to find their beds destroyed and their food contaminated. Compared to some of the other victims, these people were lucky.

At Parque Omar in-kind donations for the flood and landslide victims are being collected. What are needed most at this time are mattresses, blankets, dried and canned foods, medicines and items for babies.

It is going to take time and money for those left homeless to rebuild, and for those whose homes were flooded but left standing to clean up the mess and replace their lost property. But of course, every time disaster strikes in Panama opportunists take to the streets purporting to collect funds for the victims but actually gathering money for themselves.

That is why the SINAPROC disaster relief agency, the neighborhood councils in the affected areas and the 20-30 Club have established bank accounts into which you can deposit money and be assured that it will be used only to provide relief to victims of this disaster.
