One adjective that tends to raise hackles among Zonians is the word "manicured" when used to describe the lawns of the former Canal Zone. That's because it was used by unsympathetic reporters to create the impression of a luxurious lifestyle that people in the United States associated with Beverly Hills or comparable upscale enclaves. Yes, it is true that the old Panama Canal Company had a grounds crew that did a professional job, and that the Zonians never had to mow their lawns. No, with only one or two possible exceptions, none of the Canal Zone residences could be properly called mansions. And what does Balboa's El Prado, which is now officially named after President Roberto Chiari but is still popularly known as the Prado, look like today? "Well manicured" --- by the Panama Canal Authority grounds crew.
