Fundacion Humanitas dinner, October 15
One of Panama’s more noteworthy pieces of public art is the statue of St. Francis of Assisi comforting a dog, in Dolega along the road from David to Boquete. It is not Panama’s only monument to the saint who preached kindness to animals. Panama has a serious problem with abandoned dogs and cats. It would be far worse were Panama not influenced by the cultural tradition of which St. Francis is such a legendary example --- yes, we have a lot of cats living on the streets of the capital, but we also have a lot of people who feed them and take them to the veterinarian when they are sick or injured. Fundacion Humanitas is a group dedicated to protecting animals. Right now, they are raising funds for a mobile unit for attention to dogs and cats in needy areas. The group also does important work promoting kindness to and knowledge about animals among school kids, lessons that last a lifetime and surely accomplish more for individual animals than the foundation could ever do directly by itself. The foundation is holding its annual fundraising dinner on October 15, 2004 at 8 p.m. at Palacio Dorado on Tumba Muerto. The tax-deductible donation is $25 per person. Checks must be written out to "Fundacion Humanitas."
